| We finally performed on the stage of the Sydney Opera House! Led by
Maestro Jindong Cai, the Stanford Symphony Orchestra, in collaboration
with Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir, Sydney University Musical
Society, Sydney University Graduate Choir, Sydney Conservatorium
Choirs, Joubert Singers, and of course, members from Stanford Symphonic
Chorus like myself, over 400 musicians together presented Verdi's
greatest vocal work-- the magnificent Messa da Requiem. The orchestra
did a fantastic job and our huge combined chorus delivered the most
dramatic and powerful performance of this work I've ever witnessed! I
am so honored that I could be a part of this great concert. I wish I
could be back to perform again one day-- hopefully as the soloist

Next
to Jindong..'s poster Too bad I couldn't be a student that he would
be proud of... only if one day I could go back to school and take his
class again.

| This is part of an email from John:
It seems that Jake really is steadily becoming a big star. On the
calendar in his website, I found that Oct 17 has been
officiallydesignated as "Jake Shimabukuro Day"
in hawaii for his "contribution tothe people and state of Hawaii".
Quite an honor for a young musician. A new article is saying that Jake's
just-released album "Dragon" is doing very well in Japan, and is
expected to sell 100,000 copies in Japan alone. 100,000 is already as
good as Bela Fleck's better sellingalbums. Doing quite well!

| A great cellist.
His name is Ilya Levtoev, currently an MBA student in Stanford. I've
never witness such an excellent cellist live. I saw him playing in an music event
in the business school in Stanford, and his playing is so musical and sublime. I heard that he studied his undergrad in
Juilliard and Columbia at the same time. Really amazing. He performed
through out a recital of all talented Stanford busienss students and he
really shines. I saw him performed Chopin's Polonaise Brillante
and as the lead cellist in Popper's Requiem for three cello and piano. Truely touched.
Especially after reading an article of what's happening to 1994 Juilliard grads now (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/12/arts/music/12waki.html), I think this guy is having the best of both worlds.
Damn, should've go talk to him after the recital:-p

| What a small world, especially when my boddy John meet my boddy Jake on the street of NYC
I am not kidding.
The story goes, John and Josie walking on the street of New York going to see Jake's concert (ok, that part is sort of cheating:-p) and before that they are looking for some dinner. You know in New York, most restaurants have their menu posted outside and John was reading it. All the sudden he recognized there is a instrument case next to his feet, and as sensitive to uke as him, he immediately recognizes that it is a uke and claimed, "hey, there is a uke here!" Not until the guy sitting on the outdoor table turns around while hearing this, my buddy John notices that it was my buddy Jake Shimabukuro

<< John and I >> <<Jake (CD cover)>>
John was shocked but he immediately pulled out all his Jake's CD collection and ask Jake to sign them, as he was thinking about going backstage to intercept Jake right after the concert. As such a nice guy as Jake, of course he signed all the CDs. John and Joshie then proceed inside the restaurant and had their dinner. Afterwards, Jake walked in and said hi, and told them that the dinner was on him
After John told me this story I sent Jake an email right away to complete the loop John and I are both going to work hard on our instrument skills and jamming skills, in case one day we could have a chance to jam with Jake. | | |
